Campus Enhancements:  (8/23/10)   This has been an exciting summer on the campus of Wesleyan Christian Academy! We have had the opportunity to complete some wonderful updates in and around our campus. As you enter from the Eastchester entrance of the academy, you will see a new lighted “WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN ACADEMY” sign.  When driving through the parking lot to where the chapel is located, you will notice “WESLEYAN” banners in the upper and lower levels of the parking lot; there are banners in the parking lot and soccer field area on the Centennial side of the academy as well. There is also a large red “W” on the high school building at the soccer field and above the high school gym entrance. It is our desire to make a positive statement to everyone who enters our campus and to those who are just passing by.

In addition to the completion of exterior projects, there have been several projects completed inside our campus facility.  We now have a new window installed at the pool where the trophy case was previously located. Painted above the window is our vision statement, “To know and live the truth”. This window will allow people to observe our swim meets and guests will be able to readily see our beautiful pool area.   We also have redecorated both the women and men’s restrooms that are located near the pool window with new paint and graphics, light fixtures, and furniture.

There also have been various projects completed in the middle school gym area. The wall between the middle school gym and hallway is now enclosed and a beautiful trophy case has been installed in the hallway. This will hold many of the conference trophies and state championships that Wesleyan has earned through the years.  Finally, you will also notice in our gym that a red stripe has been painted on the walls and a large “W” is now in the center of the stage. This has given the gym an updated fresh look.

It is exciting to see our campus enhanced in so many ways, and we give God the glory for what He is allowing to happen at WCA.

2010 Fall Alumni Games: (8/07/10)  What a wonderful evening of fellowship and sports was enjoyed at the 2010 Fall Sports Alumni Games.  With the addition of a woman’s soccer game, there were over 54 alumni athletes that registered to participate in the evening’s games!  A FREE hotdog/hamburger supper was served to everyone in attendance.  The playground was full of “future” alumni enjoying meeting new friends!  We had alumni present from the Kernersville Wesleyan Academy Class of 1977 all the way up to last year’s class of 2010. There was plenty of food, good fellowship and a lot of action on the court/field. Everyone had an opportunity to reconnect with former classmates, teachers and coaches.  This year it was a privilege to have Coach Brenda Cook and Coach David Sanford in attendance.  At the end of the game Coach Sanford challenged all of the soccer alumni and current players to continue seeking the Lord – even if you feel like you have drifted away and nothing makes sense right now.  He is still the same God, longing for a personal relationship with each one of us. Of course, not only athletes were in attendance – the hill and the stands were filled with current and alumni fans.  Suffice it to say…our alumni continue to influence not only our state, but our country and “the ends of the earth” as they pursue their careers, dreams and goals. It was a pleasure to reconnect with old friends! If you missed this event, we will have another alumni games night in November for both women’s and men’s basketball players.  Start making your plans now!     For a few more pictures,  click here.

WCA Students Travel To London and Paris:  (6/9/10) On June 1st, high school students from WCA left Raleigh-Durham airport for a seven day trip to London and Paris.  Rob Hoots, Rise Vidovich, and Regina Faucette chaperoned this group. They traveled with the Christian tour company, Joshua Expeditions. On their first day in London, they visited the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, St. Martin-In-The-Fields Church and Leicester Square for dinner.  Day two took them to Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, St. James’ Park, The British Museum and they attended Les Miserables

The next day the students left at 5:30 am for a train, via the Chunnel, to Paris. When they arrived in Paris, their day included visits to the Musee d’Orsay, the Latin Quarter and Sacre Coeur Cathedral.  Day two was the Louvre where they were able to see such masterpieces as the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory and the Venus de Milo as well as many more famous works of art.  They continued their day on the Champs Elysees, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Eiffel Tower!  Everyone reported that the view from the top of the tower was breathtaking.

The next day, the group made their way to Versailles, the palace of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. Their final day in Paris was spent shopping along the Champ Elysees, hunting for souvenirs and gifts for their families back home.

The group arrived back in Greensboro the evening of June 8th tired but happy.  They were truly blessed to have had this time together and to travel with a Christian tour company. They will treasure these memories forever.

For The Second Consecutive Year, Servant, WCA’s High School Chorus Has Won The Harris Teeter “Sing My Jingle Contest”:  (5/17/10)  This year Servant also won 2nd and 3rd place for two other video submissions to the contest.  Over 100 entries were submitted from a seven state region. The chorus traveled to Concord, NC to perform for the management team of Harris Teeter, Inc. at their Spring Convention.   After Servant’s performance, the crowd of 300 plus gave them a standing ovation. The President of Harris Teeter, Fred Morganthall, told the crowd that “no other group was even close to winning the contest.”  President Morganthall presented to WCA’s Fine Arts Director, Joe Hilliard, a check for $10,000. Harris Teeter has chosen to release the commercial on the television program “Glee” on May 25 and the finale of “American Idol” on May 26.  Ringtones of the jingles are available at www.HarrisTeeter.com.

WCA’s Varsity Baseball Team Won Its Second North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (NCISAA) 3A State Championship: (5/17/10) This was an unexpected title for this year’s team because of the loss of five prominent senior players from last year. Wesleyan competes in the largest division of private schools in the NCISAA. The team relied on Colossians 3:23 for their inspiration and unyielding desire to give their maximum effort from the first day of practice until the completion of the season. This resulted in the baseball team bringing home the state title once again to WCA. The team has won seven of the last eight PACIS titles and have played in the state championship series five of the last eight seasons. The team looks forward to the opportunity to defend their title in 2011.

Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men.”

Three WCA Soccer Players Commit To Play College Soccer: (5/2/10) Seniors Jordan Lessard, Kevin Polk, and Aaron Vidovich finalized their plans for the 2010-2011 soccer season by signing contracts this week. Lessard received a scholarship to play center-midfield for NCAA Division III Wheaton College, a four-year private school which is often referred to as the Harvard of Christian colleges. At this time, he plans to study Business and Economics. Jordan is the son of Paul and Jayne Lessard.

Kevin Polk has signed to play soccer at Eastern University in Pennsylvania. A bit of a newcomer to WCA, Kevin has been a part of our soccer program for the last two years. Kevin grew up in New Jersey. During his freshman year in New Jersey, he was selected to join the Charlotte Eagles’ touring team. It was on a trip to Brazil that Kevin met several WCA soccer alumni. Through their influence, Kevin and his parents made the decision that he would leave New Jersey to attend WCA for his last two years of high school. Kevin has grown spiritually and athletically during his two years here. Currently Senior Chaplain, he will soon head to Division III, Middle Atlantic Conference school, Eastern University – about an hour from his home – a changed young man. Kevin is the son of Donald and Laurie Polk.

Aaron Vidovich has chosen to play with NCAA Division II school, Anderson University, in the Conference Carolinas. Although he considered Covenant College and Appalachian, he knew immediately that Anderson was the place for him. Aaron has plans to study Graphic Design. Aaron is the son of Paul and Rise Vidovich.

WCA Swimmer Cara Chance Receives Scholarship And Commits To Radford University:  (5/2/10)  With coaches, classmates, and family looking on, Senior Cara Chance signed on the dotted line agreeing to swim with the NCAA Division I Radford University Highlanders. Cara has been a dedicated swimmer for the majority of her school years, taking only a short break during her middle school years to try gymnastics and soccer. Radford is one of only two colleges in the Big South with a swimming and diving program. Cara has primarily swum the 100 fly, 100 back, 100 free and 200 free. She is confident that this is what she wants to do and her coaches have assured her she is gifted enough to swim at this next level. Cara plans to major in Biology and is looking towards a career in occupational therapy. Cara is the daughter of Keith and Suzy Chance.

Lending a Helping Hand…(3/31-10)   Usually when a tornado hits a town we see it on the news and are amazed at the pictures.  This past week the residents of High Point experienced the devastation of a tornado first hand.  Several families in our school were impacted by the tornado that roared through our town on Sunday, March 28 at about 7:15 p.m.  As most students in our community were beginning their spring break, many WCA students, parents, and faculty were rallying around friends and neighbors to do anything they could to help families whose homes had been touched by the tornado.  Mr. Mike Jones, Chairman of the school board, lives on a cul-de-sac that was very hard hit.  Several of his neighbors have lost their homes.  Mr. and Mrs. Cebollero, teachers at WCA, also live on that cul-de-sac and were amazed at what they saw after the noise of the storm subsided. Trees down, windows gone, roofs damaged, debris everywhere – it was hard to know where to start.  As news spread that their home had been hit, people came from everywhere with trucks, chain saws, rakes and brooms and began to help clear the mess.  Many students gave up days of spring break to go from house to house and help anyone who needed assistance.  Principals, chaplains, students, parents, and administrators gathered and offered sleeping arrangements, meals and plain muscle to get everything in some order.  News spread quickly of other families that needed help and people quickly volunteered. This was our opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus to neighbors and friends. As we continue to help those that have been affected by this disaster, let us also remember and trust in this promise, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

WCA students arrive in Washington DC on historic weekend.  (3/23/10)  There are certain times in our lives when we only realize the full significance of a moment as we are able to look back. The weekend of March 18-21 will be one of those times for WCA’s AP European and US History students. These students had the great fortune to be in Washington DC on one of the most historic weekends of their lifetimes.  This annual trip was planned months ago with the same activities being scheduled as in years past: Smithsonian Air & Space/US History/Holocaust Museums, Library of Congress, monuments, and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. But this year the real history was centered around the Capitol Building. Friday morning the students met with Congresswoman Virginia Fox and Congressman Howard Coble. Mrs. Fox led the students into the Capitol building to the House of Representatives where they witnessed a debate on the historic Health Care Legislation, and a test vote to allow parties to work at securing votes for their side.  Mrs. Fox then took the time to explain the inner workings of the House, and with great pride, shared the everyday issues the House works on, as well as the more urgent issues continually developing in Washington with regards to the healthcare bill. On Saturday the students had the unique opportunity to gather with over 40,000 citizens at the Tea Party Rally. One of the students commented that this was the first time they had been a part of something so big and actually felt like they were making a difference. That sentiment became the real theme of this year’s trip…making a difference…being willing to take a stand that could affect the future of our country. This trip became a “living history” lesson.

WCA Women’s Swim Team wins 3A State Title!  (2/23/10)  Last Sunday as the swim team was boarding the bus for the State Championship meet, Coach MaryKay Bell remembers thinking her WCA Women’s Swim Team might be able to place third and maybe even second, but she held out little hope for a state title. Last year, WCA’s score was 60 points under the first place score so there was very little thought given to a first place position. In addition, the powerful Charlotte Country Day School’s swim team promised to set a high standard for the meet. With only three events left in the meet, the WCA women checked the scoreboard and found themselves winning by one point.  Charlotte was right behind them and, with three more events to swim, would likely pass them by easily.  Coach Bell told her girls to get in the pool, swim as hard as they could and - whatever it took – stay ahead of the Charlotte swimmers.  “I want you to swim like never before! I want you to hurt when you get out of the water!”

The relay was the final event, and the team took Coach Bell’s instructions to heart. Relays count double points, so the WCA Women knew they couldn’t relax now; they had to beat Charlotte. The relay was the final event and the team took Coach Bell’s instructions to heart.  Several swam personal bests in the relay, but in the end they came up short by .40 of a second.  It was a difference that would land them in second place.

With much disappointment and a few tears, the girls turned their attention to cheering for the WCA Men’s team relay. As the boys were swimming, Coach Bell walked to check the board.  What she saw made her shake her head and look again – WCA 153, CCDS 151.  She asked an official standing nearby if those were the final scores and he confirmed that they were.  Somehow, their calculations were wrong: They hadn’t lost by 3 points, they had WON the State Championship by 2 points!!

In a matter of minutes the mood changed from tears to screaming – Wesleyan had just won their first-ever State Championship in Swimming.  Before leaving for the meet, Mrs. Bell told Athletic Director Viera, “We could come in third, if we are lucky maybe second.  If we ever come in first – I’ll retire! I didn’t think there was any way we could win!” She is definitely rethinking that statement and making plans for next year.

Coach Bell coaches the Varsity Swim Teams with the assistance of Coach Amanda Watson.  Swimmers on the 2009-2010 Women’s Swim Team participating in the championship ‘are: Nicole Bell, Cara Chance, Mary Ray Coble, Erilyn Corliss, Tiana Eovaldi, Kimberly Eurillo, Julie Faucette, Katrina Fleeman, Stephanie Fleeman, Lauren Mock, Morgan Mock, Christine Mulligan, Rachel Pittard, Katherine Reavis, Alyson Record, Holly Schallert, Morgan Speight, Lauren Turner and Elizabeth Whelan. Swimmers not participating in the meet: Emily Alexander, Lorin Bell, Cam Farrar, Erica Hamilton, Hadassah Hampton, Madison Hancock, Gabbi Looney, Ashley Lowery, Erica Martin, Sydney Parker, and Sarah Rhymer.

Congratulations to Silver and Gold Key Finalists in the Scholastic Art Awards program: (1/26/10) The Scholastic Art Awards is a visual art awards program for middle and high school students.  Students from all fifty states participate in this program.  Across the nation, about 150,000 entries are received each year on the regional level.  Of these entries, approximately 15,000 are designated as Gold Key Finalists.  Senior, Ashley Morgan is our Gold Key Finalist this year.  Ashley's work along with the other gold winners from the Eastern/Central North Carolina region is on display in the Virginia Thompson Graves and the Lula E. Rackley Galleries on the Barton College campus.  Digital images of the Gold Key artworks will be sent for consideration in the national jury process.

Christian College Fair Ranks WCA # 1: (2/11/10)  Wesleyan Christian Academy is pleased to announce that its National Christian College Fair event was ranked No. 1 in the nation for 2009-10 . The fair is sponsored by the North American Coalition for Christian Admissions Professionals (NACCAP).

NACCAP determined the national ranking by reviewing actual attendance and evaluating the satisfaction levels of college representatives participating in the event.

At the top-ranked event this year, 38 colleges were represented, along with Impact 360 (a gap year program). The event was supported by students and parents from Wesleyan, High Point Christian Academy, Caldwell Academy, Calvary Baptist Day School, Hayworth Christian School, home-school groups, public school students and parents, and others from the community.

Wesleyan has been the host site for several years, and looks forward to opening its doors to the National Christian College Fair again this fall. The 2010 event will be held at Wesleyan on Sept. 28. The school encourages students and parents to attend the fair and learn more about the nation’s many excellent Christian colleges and universities.

For more information about the 2010 National Christian College Fair, contact Diane Whitman at 336-884-3333, ext. 243, or dwhitman@wesed.org. For more information about NACCAP, visit www.naccap.org.

WCA Students Support Haiti: (1/22/10) In response to the recent devastation in Haiti, Diakonos, our high school service club, raised nearly $6,000 by sponsoring a school-wide bake sale and LED silk rose sale on the 21st of January. After students from all grade levels made their purchases, a total of $5,925.00 had been raised. Abby, a kindergartner at WCA, (pictured below) had also wanted to help Diakonos and do something special for the people of Haiti. She and her mother baked and decorated sugar cookies and placed them in the Childcare Center. By the end of the day her cookies had brought in $75.00 bringing our grand total to $6,000! How exciting to see God working in the hearts of our younger students, as well!

Several parents stopped by and made contributions. Middle school parent, Van Massey, took up a collection in his office and brought it by the school in support of this project. High Point Community Foundation, under the direction of Paul Lessard, another Wesleyan parent, offered to match whatever funds that were collected. What an outstanding response! The Drama Dept. also has plans in place to contribute a portion of their proceeds from the upcoming drama production to the needs in Haiti. WCA will be partnering with World Hope International to ensure that our support will get to the people in greatest need. This organization already has the network in place (staff on the ground) to channel the necessary resources immediately. We are truly blessed with parents and students who recognize and understand the importance of giving.

"External religious worship (religion as it is expressed in outward acts) that is pure and unblemished in the sight of God the Father is this: to visit and help and care for the orphans and widows in their affliction and need…" (James 1:27) (Amplified Bible)

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9) (NIV)

DIAKONOS CLUB PROJECT: (12/11/09) Diakonos Club helps with Christmas party at Wesleyan Arms Retirement Center and presents residents with a new Wii game system!

In September, our high school service club, Diakonos, initiated an Ultimate Frisbee event as a means to raise funds to support some of their projects for the upcoming year.  Over 150 WCA students participated and the event raised $600! The club already had several service projects in mind for the year, the first of which was getting involved with the residents at the Wesleyan Arms Assisted Living Center.  In November, several students started leading craft sessions and assisting with resident “Game Days”.  Their ultimate goal was to purchase a Wii game system to present to Wesleyan Arms to be used as an interactive tool to help get the residents up and moving.

In December, a group of students hosted the Christmas/Birthday party for the residents and accomplished their goal!  Several students entertained the residents by singing Christmas carols and handing out birthday presents.  Then they gave each resident a handmade wreath for their doors during the holiday season. Finally, they gave the residents the Wii game system!  Although the whole idea of Wii was new to most of them, resident activities director Janet Wagner said they have really enjoyed it.  “We actually have 2 residents who were on bowling teams in their younger days.  They have really enjoyed the bowling game and have quite a competition going on! The students were great to get it set up and show us how to use it.”

Congratulations to Maria Lubrano ('07)! (12/6/09) The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (UNC) Women's soccer team won the 2009 NCAA Division I National Championship this weekend. Congratulations are extended to the entire team, but especially to our very own Wesleyan Grad, Maria Lubrano who is a member of the team! For Maria, a sophomore midfielder, this was her second trip to a National Championship game. UNC went ahead early in the game and managed to hold onto that lead until the end. Maria saw 33 minutes of playing time during the second half. The Tar Heels shut out the Stanford Cardinals at Aggie Soccer Stadium before a crowd of 8,536. The UNC women ended their season 23-3-1.

VETERAN'S DAY PROGRAM : (11/11/09) The auditorium was filled to overflowing with students, parents and veterans gathering to honor those who have served in the military in defense of our country and freedoms. As you entered the auditorium and saw students dressed in red, white and blue; and retired and current military personnel dressed in their military branch's uniforms, you were overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude and pride for our country. One of the most exciting events of the day was a surprise visit by 4th grader Amaya Waddy's father, U.S. Army Chief warrant officer, Jonathan Waddy. Mr. Waddy is stationed in New York and was uncertain if he could attend the program, so he opted to make it a surprise visit. Amaya's face lit up when she turned around and saw her father. It was a special moment to see their family reunited for at least a day. We were honored to have Mr. Max Meeks, radio announcer for WMFR and a retired Naval officer, speak for our program. He was introduced by his grandson, Alex Meeks. He entertained us with stories and memories of his career in the United States Navy during WWII. Every veteran attending the program was honored with a certificate thanking them for their service to our country. What a blessing to be able to personally shake the hand of a veteran, look them in the eye, and thank them for what they have done for our country.

Fine Arts Department Receives Grants: (11/17/09) Mrs. Pam Wheeler Drama) has been awarded a Teacher Arts Grants from the Junior League and The High Point Area Arts Council; and Mrs. Karen Wilkins (Elementary Art) has received a grant from the City of High Point, Guilford County, Masland Foundation and the North Carolina Arts Council. Each year these organizations partner to award grants to schools that will use the monies to support and enhance art programs within our area schools. Mrs. Wilkins has applied for, and received a grant for the past 21 years. Since coming to Wesleyan, she has used the funds for our annual K-5 Arts Impact Day which showcases our students and 22 local artists. Scheduled for April 30,2010, this has become an event that the students look forward to each year. Mrs. Wheeler will use her grant for a Safety First-Stage Combat project. Mr. Stephen D. Hyers, managing Director of the City Arts Drama Center, will hold a class to teach drama students how to "stage" a combat scene using swords, bayonets, fists or sabers. They will learn how to use proper safety measures while still portraying a realistic scene. Congratulations to both Mrs. Wheeler and Mrs. Wilkins.

Cross Country Runner Completes 2nd Marathon: Wesleyan's Thompson completes second Marine Corps Marathon

Given Drew Thompson's accomplishment Sunday, his race on Friday in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association's cross country meet will be little more than a walk in the park. A short sprint, at the most. The Wesleyan Christian Academy sophomore on Sunday completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington. Thompson, 15, covered the 26.2 miles at a steady pace in three hours and 45 minutes. And now he is turning his attention to Friday's season-ending championship meet and a shot at making all-state at Hagan Stone Park. "My soreness should be gone," Thompson says. "I'm guessing by tomorrow, I'll be almost pain-free. I'm looking to do just as well as I normally would without running a marathon. I want to get in the 16:20s. Hagan Stone always has been one of my faster courses."

Thompson, the runner of the year for the Piedmont Athletic Conference of Independent Schools (season PR 16:46), also completed the Marine Corps last year (4:47:14), although the race came two days after the state meet. He ran Sunday with not only the endorsement of his coach, Brian Roberts, but also his help. "He's definitely pushed me," Thompson says. "We did a couple of runs during the year that were pretty long with the team. About two of the 10-milers were with the team. He's been very understanding with me, maybe taking it easy a day or two after the long runs." Roberts put his full trust in his fastest runner. "He's not going to do anything to compromise something for the team," Roberts says. "I know he's a young runner, but I still trust his thoughts and his ideas about running. … He's a great asset to our team. He really studied how to run, how to train." Thompson's longest training run was 18 miles, five days before the conference meet. Thompson won the race (17:04). "I thought if he had recovered that well, he'll recover for the state meet," Roberts says. "Talking to him the day afterward, he felt sore but didn't feel tightened up."

Thompson, who raised money as part of team running for Love Without Boundaries, might have company from his Wesleyan teammates in next year's Marine Corps. "There's about five of us thinking about running it next year," he says. "I know one girl, she's already doing one half-marathon. She really wants to do it."

And Roberts will cheer them on, if not help direct their training. "It'll be neat to see how that plays out for us as a team," he says.

Annual Gift Giving Golf Campaign: (10/15/09) Beginning with an exciting school wide assembly on August 28th, the 2009 Annual Gift Giving Campaign got off to a great start! Mr. Johnny Evans, former NCSU and Cleveland Brown quarterback/punter, was our guest speaker for the morning. Mr. Evans is currently the Director of the eastern NC chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Working with this year's theme of "I Can Do All Things", Mr. Evans challenged the students to put their complete trust in the Lord, make His ways our ways and then watch what each of us can do. This year's campaign was dedicated to the memory of Tee Sledge, a longtime favorite classroom golfer. Tee's name was placed on the back of the AGG tee-shirts as a reminder of his magnetic personality, enthusiasm and competitive spirit. The students were challenged to raise this year's fund in memory of Tee. Our goal this year was set at $174,136.

One of the highlights of the campaign was the Golf Tournament. All classroom golfers and corporate sponsors were invited to attend along with several administrators and staff. Although the morning started off a little damp and dreary, everyone who gathered at Meadowlands Golf Course was not disappointed. It was a great day! The morning round was won by Shook, Moebius & O'Connor and the afternoon round went to the team of Hedrick, Craft, Brewer and Prillaman, who also had the lowest overall score of the day.

Including gifts-in-kind, our total giving of $196,648.71 was announced and celebrated at the AGG Closing Assembly. We give thanks to the Lord for a successful campaign and for parents and friends who support Wesleyan so generously. We would like to thank Mrs. Fay Hoggard for her excellent leadership as the AGG Chairwoman. We are also grateful to Jackie Sledge for continuing Tee's legacy and allowing us to honor him this year.

Wesleyan's New Tennis Courts Dedicated : (10/07/09) Head of School Dr. Rob Brown, Mr. Joel Farlow and HP Chamber of Commerce representative Barry Ingram cut the red ribbon and officially opened Wesleyan's brand new tennis courts today. Many students, parents, teachers and of course – the tennis teams gathered at 3:15 on an absolutely beautiful day to thank those who had made the courts a reality and dedicate them to the glory of God. Pastor John Vernon, former interim administrator who was instrumental in the purchase of the land for the courts, prayed the prayer of dedication. It was wonderful to finally see them completed and ready for a match. First out on the courts for a challenge match were Fox 8 Sport's Danny Harnden, and varsity player standout Ginny Brodd. Some friendly competition ensued with each player holding their own. After that several of the tennis team took to the courts and started practicing. Several mentioned how nice it is going to be to practice right here on campus. Plus, the team hopes more fans can come to see the matches now that many will be on campus! One of the highlights of the afternoon was an impromptu match-up with Dr. Rob Brown and Athletic Director, Ricardo Viera. They invited some of the team to join them in a little doubles play. Wesleyan has several home matches scheduled for the rest of the season. Make plans to come out and cheer on our WCA tennis teams!

Elementary Computer Lab Gets a Fresh Look ! (10/12/09) The elementary computer lab has a brand new look these days! As a result of gifts to the Annual Gift Giving campaign, the computer lab has been updated with 30 brand new, flat screen Dell computers. In addition to the new computers, the educational software was also updated. "This latest edition of standard-based courseware determines the appropriate instructional level for each student. It introduces students to new concepts and allows them to excel at their own pace," said Mrs. Lori Puckett. Mrs. Puckett is the computer lab instructor for all elementary grades K1-4th. Dr. Perry Nicklow emphasized that "Wesleyan Christian Academy is dedicated, under God, to provide students with meaningful learning opportunities." He also reminded the students that it is because of the Lord's great love for us that we are able to receive the blessing of these new computers. The 4th grade students were invited to cut the ribbon and be the first to walk through the new lab. Mrs. Anita Blackburn, IT Director, and a wonderful group of parent volunteers worked long hours over several days to clear out the old computers, set up the new ones and make sure everything was running smoothly. Their hard work enabled the lab to keep running with very little "down" time. Special thanks are extended to all for their help.

Homecoming 2009: (9/28 - 10/2/09) Here comes the red & gold! This year another exciting spirit week saw all kinds of outfits, decorations, candy, cheers, banners, posters and PLENTY of red & gold. The high school/middle school students rocked the halls with each day's theme of Pajama Day, Wacky-Tacky Day, Western Day, Color Day, and finally - Red & Gold Day. On Friday, the elementary students joined in the festivities dressing in their WCA red shirts and adding more red and gold to complete the look. Thursday evening found the high school halls in full swing with each class feverishly decorating their hall as part of the competition for the coveted Spirit Stick. Friday morning the parking lot was full by 7:15 with students gathering in preparation for the parade. This year the parade CIRCLED the Eastchester parking lot and gave each elementary and middle school student ample opportunity to catch some candy! By 2:15 the gym was full of students, faculty, parents and friends all gathered for the Pep Rally and announcement of the Spirit Stick winner. The final competition began with the freshmen performing their skit, "Fast-Food Freshmen". Next were the "Mystery Solving Sophomores", followed by the "Juniors of Oz", and the "Stellar Seniors". The cheerleaders performed and led in cheers for our Wesleyan Trojans while the Pep Band kept the energy level high. All the fall athletes were recognized, Mr. Barber and Mrs. Amos were crowned Faculty Homecoming King and Queen and it was finally time for Mr. Rickman to present the awards. The 2009 Spirit Stick winners were ……. the Seniors!!

There was much celebration and mayhem before heading out to the soccer field. The JV team beat Charlotte Country Day 5-1. Following in the tradition of the past 5 years, the middle school boys team walked onto the field and warmed up with the varsity players. Then varsity and middle school players paired up for team introductions in the center of the field. Servant (plus any alumni in attendance) thrilled the crowd with the Star Spangled Banner. The Trojans took the field and trounced the Village Christian Academy Knights 4-0. During half-time the homecoming court was introduced and Mrs. Dotty Hoots crowned this year's Queen and Princess. Miss Diana Parks was selected as Princess and Miss Mackenzie Owens was crowned Wesleyan's 2009 Homecoming Queen.

Saturday evening over 300 high school students gathered at the gym for the Winter Wonderland homecoming banquet. The Student Government Association had done a fantastic job transforming the gym into a winter wonderland and there was plenty of food. The evening culminated in a talent show that had everyone laughing, singing and cheering. With the conclusion of the banquet, Homecoming 2009 was history.

Record Breaking Attendance at the College Fair : (9/29/09) The annual National Christian College Fair was held in the HS gym with over 700 parents and students in attendance – our largest fair ever! This year there were representatives from 38 Christian colleges and one gap year program (Impact 360). Colleges from as far away as New York and Texas to as close as North Carolina were represented. Students from Wesleyan and all over the community had the opportunity to come in, visit with the representatives, ask questions, and learn more about potential Christian college opportunities. Several of the college reps remarked that this was one of the best fairs they had attended. They were very impressed with the students and the types of questions they were asking. This was an excellent opportunity for students of all ages to begin exploring what colleges are available, what they are offering and which one might be a perfect fit for them. The fair gives students an excellent, "anxiety-free" setting to begin preparing for life after high school! WCA's 2008 fair was voted #1 in the southeast by the North American Coalition for Christian Admissions Professionals. Awards for this year's fair will be awarded during the summer. Special thanks are extended to Mrs. Diane Whitman, high school guidance counselor, for planning and overseeing this annual event. Mark your calendars for next October's fair. You will not want to miss it.

Grandchildren Honor Their Grandparents: (9/25/09) This morning the halls of the elementary school were filled with excited children showing off their classrooms and classmates to their grandparents! Grandparents' Honor Day is one of the highlights of the elementary school year. The festivities moved over to the auditorium where this year's theme of "Remembering When" was beautifully illustrated by both the elementary and 4th grade chorus singing Grandparents Are Special and Bless The Lord. We were also honored to have the Joyful Sounds play for the program. This wonderful group of "grandparents" travel around the Triad area, playing instruments they have created, and singing old favorites. The children were entertained by watching music come from saws, jugs, kazoos, buckets, and much more! Mr. Tom Chewning was introduced by his grandson, Brandon Steele, and spoke on the topic "I Am So Grateful – Now". What a wonderful message he presented to the children as well as the adults on the importance of understanding and recognizing our blessings. The morning ended with students getting to check out, and spend the rest of the day with their grandparents.

Wil Myers ('09)-Top Pioneer League Prospect Visits Wesleyan: (9/17/09) Wil Myers ('09) has been named as the top Pioneer League prospect by Baseball America, after only one month playing with the rookies. From behind the plate, he has thrown out 5 of 11 runners attempting to steal second. In 68 at bats he has collected 18 hits resulting in a .436 average. He drove home 14 runs, was walked 9 times, and had 15 strikeouts and 2 stolen bases. Scoring 29 runs, 7 doubles, one triple and 4 homeruns, he is proving himself as a rookie to be watched. During a brief few days off, Wil stopped by Wesleyan and dropped in on Friday morning's high school assembly. Receiving a standing ovation from his former classmates, he gave the school an autographed baseball commemorating his first "round" as a rookie. Tim Rickman, high school principal, presented Wil the Louisville Slugger bat in recognition of his achievement as the 2009 Louisville Slugger National HS Player of the Year for NC. Below is a complete listing of Wil's recognitions during the summer and his senior year. After spending a few days at home with his parents, Wil travels to Arizona for a two-month training session in an instructional league.

Dear Wesleyan Families ,

I am writing this letter to provide you with an update on the Wesleyan Arms and Wesleyan Homes retirement center property next door to our campus. For many years Mr. Farlow, our previous head of school, has interacted with the retirement center in the event they ever considered selling this property. He also carefully researched other nearby sites that would have allowed the school to expand athletic facilities and provide additional classroom space.

When I first arrived in High Point, I was invited to attend meetings regarding the potential sale of the retirement center property. With school board approval, I have been in constant contact with the owners of the retirement center property, received appraisals, and conversed with the investment firm who owns the notes/loans on the current retirement center. We also met with engineers on multiple occasions to see what could be developed on this site and the costs involved.

Due to preexisting debt on the property as well as structural issues beyond anyone's control, the price for this 15 acre property exceeded the appraised value. During this time, we learned that a third party was interested in the site – High Point University. At this time I took the opportunity of sharing with HPU our intent on purchasing the property and they graciously stepped back while we pursued this avenue. The school board and I met on multiple occasions and explored every possible avenue in order to make this work without it significantly impacting tuition, and negatively impacting our current debt management structure.

After careful investigation, continuous prayer, and counsel from a few of our donors, Wesleyan Education Center has decided that it is not a wise stewardship of God's resources to pursue this property. The adjacent 15 acres only allowed for two additional ball fields, and provided no space for additional classrooms due to a very challenging topography site.

Since we formally stepped away from the purchase of the retirement center, HPU is now in discussions with the center and intends to purchase the property. Assuming this transition will occur, I have been in contact with HPU in regards to the privacy, security and integrity of both our campuses and I will share this at another time as time progresses. In light of this decision, we have decided to move forward with looking at other pieces of land in close proximity of the school that will allow Wesleyan to develop more than what we could have done next door to us.

Although we had hoped to one day purchase this adjoining property, we give thanks to the Lord that He has made it clear to us that other exciting plans are in store for Wesleyan. Please be in prayer for the leadership of our school as we begin to explore other possibilities.

Rob Brown Head of School

Congratulations to Wesleyan Christian Academy for hosting the number one National Christian College Fair in the Southeast Region and the number ten fair in the nation during the 2008-09 school year. Each year, there are over one hundred National Christian College Fairs held throughout the nation which are sponsored by the North American Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities (NACCAP). College representatives consistently rank Wesleyan as one of their favorite fairs. The National Christian College Fair for the 2009-10 school year will be held at Wesleyan on September 29 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thirty eight colleges and one gap year program (Impact 360) have registered to participate. This event is free and open to the public.

Wil Myers ('09) Myers Signs With Royals!: (8/18/09) Myers, who starred on the baseball diamond at Wesleyan Christian Academy, officially signed with the Kansas City Royals before last night's deadline, then suited up last night for the Royals' rookie Appalachian League team in Burlington. "We drafted him as a catcher, knowing that he's certainly a talented enough athlete to play a variety of positions and play them above average, but at this point and time, we plan on him being behind the plate," said Royals general manager Dayton Moore. Myers will see his first game action tonight in Burlington as a designated hitter. The rest of the week will see him alternating between catcher and DH. Sunday he will spend the day at home and then ship out to the Royals' rookie league team at Idaho Falls, Idaho. Not having played since his Wesleyan season, Wil will be spending these last few days getting acclimated to live pitching. "He's pretty much been in a bubble since the draft," Eric Myers, Wil's father said. "They wanted him to get accustomed to playing in live games before going to Idaho Falls. We believe that he was destined to sign with the Royals. Their last two drafts have been productive. Hopefully, they'll get back on top in the next couple of years." Mrs. Myers thanked Wesleyan for Wil's last 4 years here. "I know he was meant to transfer to WCA and you all have been a great blessing to him and the entire family." Wil received a $2 million signing bonus and endorsement deals from Under Armour and Max Bats to supply his gear. He has also received monies to put in a scholarship fund to enable him to go back to college in the future. Congratulations Wil!! We are proud to call you "one of the family"!

Wil Myers (09) Myers Works Out With Burlington Royals: (7/31/09) Myers worked out with the Burlington team, but declined to speak publicly about negotiations. JJ Picollo, Asst. General Manager for the Kansas City Royals, was there to watch the workout and observe the team. Picollo's wide-ranging responsibilities, which include overseeing scouting and player development, is also involved in negotiations with draftees. While in Burlington, he talked to the representative for third-round pick Wil Myers, a catcher from Thomasville and graduate of Wesleyan Christian Academy. An Aug. 17 deadline looms for 2009 draftees to sign. Myers will enroll on a college scholarship at South Carolina if he's unsigned. "Because the dollar figure (for a signing bonus) will be significant, we'll probably have to wait until near the deadline," Picollo said. If Myers signs, his initial destination is undetermined, Picollo said. Ideally, as a signee out of high school he would go to the Arizona Rookie League, but could stay with the Burlington team to give him more game experience before entering the fall instructional league. "We can keep him busy," Picollo said. "That's what he wants."

Wil Myers (09) Myers Drafted: (6/18/09) Wil Myers was drafted in the 3rd round of the MLB first year player draft (91st overall out of 1521 picks) by the Kansas City Royals. He is currently in contract negotiations with the Royals. Negotiations will take place from now until Aug 17th. At that point, Wil will have make a decision between either signing or going to University of SC to play for the Gamecocks. Wil attended a KC predraft workout June 3rd. After meeting with management, he feels comfortable with the organization's management, philosophy, and player development. As more information becomes available we will update the website.

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

2009 Fall Alumni Night: (8/08/09) The 2009 Fall Sports Alumni Night was a wonderful success. Over 40 alumni athletes came and participated in the evening's games! The Trojan Club graciously served a FREE Hotdog supper to everyone in attendance. There was plenty of food, good fellowship and a lot of action on the court/field. Everyone had an opportunity to reconnect with former classmates, teachers and coaches. Of course, not only athletes were in attendance - the hill and the stands were filled with current and alumni fans. As a school we benefit by being able to get caught up with what's going on in the lives of our former students. We will definitely be sharing some of their exciting stories in days to come. Suffice it to say...our alumni continue to influence not only our state, but our country and "the ends of the earth" as they pursue their careers, dreams and goals. You don't want to miss our next alumni event coming in November. Start making your plans now!

Alumni Grad Hired to Teach! (8/1/09) We are excited to welcome Mrs. Anna Draughan Stokes ('99) to the high school teaching faculty. Mrs. Stokes graduated from Wesleyan in 1999 and then continued her education at High Point University earning her Bachelor of Science. She later became a graduate assistant at UNCG, teaching Spanish while obtaining her Masters of Education with a concentration in Spanish. Although her last job was in an elementary school in Columbia, SC teaching younger children, she is excited to take on the challenge of high school students. Mrs. Stokes will be teaching Spanish II, III & IV. When asked what had changed about Wesleyan since she had been a student, she replied, "It is so much bigger! There is the new gym, the 3rd floor in the HS and the whole new section at the end of the building." What is her favorite memory of Wesleyan? "Well, it would have to be Senior Trip. That really stands out as being a highlight of high school." Mrs. Stokes is married to another Wesleyan alum, Aaron Stokes ('96). Although she says she knew of Aaron in high school, she was a freshman when he was a senior. They didn't meet again until ten years later in a singles class at Westover Church. Isn't it amazing how we make our plans...but God directs our steps. Welcome back Mrs. Stokes!!

Tennis Courts under Construction: (7/20/09) If you have noticed tractors, trucks and piles of dirt along the Eastchester side of the campus, you probably thought, "What are they doing now?" How about tennis courts! Six brand new, lighted, gated tennis courts. They are slated to be completed by mid-September if the weather holds out and the temperature stays relatively low. A major retaining wall was needed to completely level out the area behind the Wesleyan Transportation building giving the back of the campus a whole new look. Along with the tennis courts will come some much needed designated bus parking. It will certainly be nice to have a place to practice and play right on our campus. Many thanks to the donors who have made this addition possible.

WCA Hires a New Head Basketball Coach : (07/15/09) WCA is pleased to announce the arrival of Keith Gatlin as the Head Varsity Men's Basketball Coach. Coach Gatlin comes to Wesleyan from a wide and varied basketball history. Having played college ball at Maryland, he furthered his career overseas, playing with teams in Germany, Greece, France, and Lebanon. For twelve years he made his living playing professional basketball, but now he prefers to spend his time with his wife and family and have an influence in high school players lives. His last coaching job was at Veritas Sports Academy where he compiled a 10-11 record despite not having a home court. Before Veritas, Coach Gatlin was on the court as an assistant coach at Greensboro Day. He is ready to take on the Wesleyan Trojans! "I want to help bring excitement back about basketball at Wesleyan. Basketball is a real big thing here, but it's definitely about more than just athletics. Basketball is just a tool to get the kids prepared for life after basketball." His primary goal is to minister to kids through basketball while showing them how to keep God first. According to Athletic Director Ricardo Viera, "Keith has a great passion for basketball and for Christ. I believe his relationship with the Lord, and using his coaching as a ministry to his athletes, will be a great asset to Wesleyan." We will probably see some new faces on our court this year...it should be exciting! Welcome to Wesleyan, Coach Gatlin.

Wes Wrenn ('05) Drafted by New York Mets ! (6/11/09) Wesley Wrenn ('05) a graduate of WCA and the Citadel, in Charleston, SC went in the 23rd round of the MLB draft to the New York Mets! While at Wesleyan, Wes played baseball, basketball, soccer and was a member of the swim team. He was named All-State, All-Conference, MVP and NC High School Player of the Year (2005). He carried his winning Wesleyan tradition on to the Citadel, where as a freshman, he earned a starting spot on the mound and garnered 15 starts, plus an ERA of 3.88 placing him 9th in the SoCon. In 2007 he made 17 appearances on the mound (starting in each one) and threw a team-leading 104.2 innings pitched, amassed a 4.64 ERA and a 6-6 record. By the end of the season, Wes had been instrumental in propelling the Bulldogs to the championship game for the third time in four years. His senior year he posted an impressive 9-3 record and was named on the SoCon All Conference Team and received their Pitcher of the Year honors. Obviously, the Mets were impressed with this right-handed pitcher because they have moved him to Brooklyn! He is now playing with the Met's farm team, the Brooklyn Cyclones, on Coney Island. "It all started right after receiving the phone call with a scout on the other end saying, 'we just drafted you and we're sending you to Brooklyn.'", Wes posts on his blog, The Brooklyn Baseball Blog. After a first day 4:45 a.m. start, physicals, jerseys, pictures and practice, opening night came around and "we waxed the Yankees 6-2 in front of a sell out crowd of 9,000 plus! You can't get much better than that!"

Wes has agreed to post on The Brooklyn Cyclones blog to give a "behind the scenes" account of a new minor league ballplayer. http://thebrooklyncyclones.blogspot.com/

Congratulations Wes! We are so proud of you!

Welcome Head of School Dr. Brown! (6/6/09) We will be seeing several new faces around campus this fall! The Brown Family has come to Wesleyan. Dr. Rob Brown, his wife, Jackie and children Sophia and Seth have taken up residency in High Point. Dr. Brown is the new Head of School here at Wesleyan Education Center. The Browns are coming to us from Red Lion Christian Academy in Bear, Delaware. Dr. Brown brings much experience to Wesleyan having received a Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee Temple, Master of Science in Sports Management from U.S. Sports Academy, Master of Religious Education from Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary and Doctorate of Ministry from Louisiana Baptist Theological Seminary. He truly feels this is God's call on his life at this time. He has been impressed with the tradition of excellence already established here and is looking forward to taking Wesleyan to that next level of excellence. One of Dr. Brown's life verses is Colossians 1:18 "...that in everything He might have the supremacy." His heart's desire is to consistently acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in everything we do. We are excited to have Sophia starting 6th grade and Seth beginning Kindergarten. It will be great to get to know the Brown family as fellow parents as well as administration. Welcome Dr. Brown!

WCA Teaching Studios: (5/10/09) The Teaching Studios, under the direction of Dr. Mike Jarrett, have partnered with the High Point Ballet for the 09-10 school year! Beginning in August of 2009 students from Wesleyan and other schools, will be able to take private dance and/or ballet lessons in the Fine Arts wing of the Academy. When the Teaching Studios opened in 2007 there were 22 privately contracted instructors available to teach private lessons in voice, wind instruments, percussion, piano, guitar and strings. Currently there are 160 students taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity. The addition of the dance partnership was the next step to creating a complete instructional program that will give students more opportunities to experience first class training in the arts. High Point Ballet was chosen for its professional and college prep instruction. The classes are intentionally structured to fit within the guidelines and standards of the Academy. At present Madeleine Arsenault is slated to be the primary instructor. This is not just recreational dancing; it is intended to provide assistance for students who wish to go to the next level using their God given talents. We encourage you to take advantage of this excellent program and opportunity to enhance your child's education in the arts. If you are interested in scheduling lessons, please contact Dr. Mike Jarrett at (336) 884-3333 ext.265.
